Bioware boss Aaryn Flynn has admitted that the company’s decision to not release any post-launch DLC for Mass Effect: Andromeda was “frustrating” for the development team at Bioware. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz , Flynn said that “The DLC schedule was frustrating for us, but that was a decision that we made as a team.”
The Mass Effect series has been a staple of the RPG genre for many years now. Its celebrated RPG gameplay, interesting story, and characters have attracted a large fan base. However, the latest instalment, Mass Effect: Andromeda, has been met with a lot of criticism both from the gaming community and critics. Going into detail, this latest instalment of the franchise has been met with a number of issues that have left many gamers disappointed.
Bioware boss Aaryn Flynn has said that we will not see any post-launch DLC for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and that the game was “frustrating” for the studio.
Casey Hudson, Bioware’s general manager, admits that the company could have spent more time on the story of its most recent game, Mass Effect Andromeda.
Hudson highlighted the studio’s intentions to create a strong narrative for its future game in a recent blog post about Anthem, emphasizing the significance of story:
“Mass Effect: Andromeda had just been published when I returned to BioWare last summer, and there was a strong movement among gamers clamoring for a narrative DLC that would address concerns about the fate of the quarians. We were unable to provide narrative DLC for Andromeda, as you are aware, which was as disappointing for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we needed to address in future games.
“That encounter proved to be a watershed point in BioWare’s mission emphasis. We need to surprise and excite players with new experiences and innovations, but we also need to remain focused on the setting, character, and narrative aspects that players expect from our games. And our games must be built in such a way that they can keep providing fresh tales and experiences to players in the worlds we’re co-creating.
“It’s in that spirit that we’re working on Anthem, a game that’s intended to immerse you in a new universe of narrative and characters that you can share with your friends in a series of adventures. It’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, but if we do it properly, it’ll feel very BioWare.”
Hudson spent the bulk of his career as a developer at Bioware, starting as a technical artist on MDK2 before rising through the ranks to project director on titles such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and, of course, the original Mass Effect trilogy. Hudson departed Bioware before Mass Effect Andromeda was fully developed, despite being engaged in the game’s early design phases.
Hudson worked as a creative director at Microsoft Studios, where he focused on creating experiences for the company’s mixed reality technology, HoloLens. Last summer, only months after the release of Andromeda and after the resignation of former general manager Aaryn Flynn, he returned to Bioware.
Anthem, according to many critics and fans, is a second opportunity for BioWare to repair the damage done by Mass Effect Andromeda. Andromeda was praised for its exciting gameplay and visual design, but it was criticized for its uneven and problematic animations, undeveloped narrative, and boring open world.
Some hoped that the game might improve with post-launch content and support, but Andromeda’s last update, 1.10, was announced in August. Those who remained engaged in Andromeda’s narrative strands, particularly the fate of the quarians and the sixth colony ark that was supposed to transport them to the Andromeda galaxy, were disappointed.
Anthem is an open-world, multiplayer science-fiction RPG that was announced at E3 last year and is generally considered as EA and Bioware’s response to games like Destiny and The Division. It will be available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. Although it was initially scheduled to be released in 2018, it is now anticipated to be released in 2019.
