Rob and our site’s team deserve credit for these suggestions.
- Start small (1 or 2 cities until they reach population 5-ish), focus on settling your cities near Resources (Strategic & Luxury),
- When scouting and investigating the terrain, take your scout one step at a time in places where you suspect there may be adversaries. This way, you won’t stumble into barbarians by mistake and lose your scout.
- Automation – It’s never a smart idea to automate your workers or scouts; AI isn’t very adept at constructing or avoiding barbarian encampments, so it’s best to guide them manually at all times.
When workers are mechanized, they may construct too many unnecessary items on tiles such as farms, resulting in a greater gold cost each turn.
- Don’t construct every structure in every city; instead, be selective and construct for specialty (1 city builds military, 1 city generates cash, 1 city generates research, etc.)
- Science – Make it a point to favor facilities that provide science. Science can assist you in researching valuable technologies and advancing much more quickly.
- Learn about the many City-State options and pick your Allies depending on your current requirements (food boost at the start of the game, cultural bonus to expand rapidly once founded, military bonus if you’re in a war).
- Once your cities start to grow, take a few turns at “Avoid/Prevent Growth” (check box on City Management screen). 10 or so, to ensure that your Economic and Happiness structures are in place before they get too large. Your happiness will be lot easier to control this way.
- Keep a watch on your Military rating on the Demographics tab; if it drops below 4th, you will be attacked.
- Keep your military to a reasonable level – don’t go overboard or you’ll end up with a lot of upkeep expenses (aim for the second or third biggest military on the Demographics page – small enough to be cheap, huge enough to prevent invasion).
- When utilizing AI partners, take in mind that they may automatically terminate any battles you’re presently in.
- Is it a friend or a foe? – Keep in mind that any of your early Allies may turn against you later on in the game.
- The more roads, the better – Once you’ve amassed a sizable amount of money, construct a slew of roads all over the place so your troops can move around more quickly.
- War assistance from Civs – You may trade gold, iron, or horses to a Civ and ask them to assist you in going to war with another Civ.
- The diplomacy summary displays how long you’ve been friends or foes with other Civilizations.
- Forests must be cut down for productivity.
- More information on the current status of the game – You may utilize info junkie to find out crucial facts like how far ahead of or behind the AI you are in terms of technology.
- Marvels – It’s important to remember that when it comes to wonders, it’s best to pick carefully. The tomb of Haicarnassus should be selected above the Statue of Zeus or the Great Wall if your city have stone or marcible.
Winning Civilization V Approach: (This strategy is a little cheap, but it works.) If you don’t enjoy loading and saving in order to win, this technique isn’t for you.) (With thanks to K7 for the suggestion.) Here’s how you win a normal game of Civilization V without being overwhelmed by the AI:
- Set your autosaves to save every five turns and save ten of them.
- Until the late Renaissance, you may manually control your employees. Allowing them to go amok is not a good idea. Each city just requires one worker. When you reach 5 food, start linking your cities to your capital.
- To be completely optimal, a city must have a radius of three tiles. Don’t construct towns that are worthless (on deserts, in the winter, near mountains, etc. ); instead, make sure they have lots of excellent resources nearby. The only way you’d want to construct a city in a “poor location” is if you need a valuable strategic resource.
- Concentrate on your financial situation. The economy, the economy, the economy. Also, don’t skimp on your military technologies.
- Build just enough military forces to keep barbarians at bay.
- You will be attacked by an AI at some point. You won’t have a powerful enough military to stop them with this approach, but you should be rolling in the dough/happiness. Here’s the catch… are you ready?
- Reload the game ten rounds back and convert all of your cities into military unit manufacturing centers. Wait for the AI to strike, then defend yourself and stomp on them.
- Before discovering this out, I played two games on the prince difficulty (as Japan and England) and lost both owing to either zero revenue, severe misery, or both. I’m now playing as Rome on a massive globe map, and I control almost all of Asia, have an income of 80 gold each turn, and a happiness of 20. I have a total of 20 military units and am preparing to invade Europe.
- The most important factor is the economy. Also, auto-save.
