Delta-Gal is an action-platformer that draws inspiration from the Megaman games, but is more focused on fast-paced action than the long and involved platforming of those classic games. The game features four unique characters, each with their own abilities and weapons. Rick the Warrior is a knight, with the ability to wield two weapons at once. In addition, Rick can summon a white knight to help him in his quest. Joanna the Thief is a witch, capable of controlling the wind and summoning a swarm of bats that help in combat. Jonathan the Ninja is a monk, with the ability to float and shoot green energy balls. Finally, Jennifer the Princess is a princess, with the ability to shoot blue fireballs and control the wind
If the 1980s and 1990s were ruled by platform games and a generation of gamers was raised with the likes of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog, then the 2010s should be dominated by side-scrolling action games, right? Not so fast. You’re going to need something a little more… Mega than that. So, what’s a Mega Man fan to do? Well, we’re not going to tell you how to Mega Man your way to success, but we will tell you that a little homage to Capcom’s classic franchise can help you stand out from the crowd.
This week, I’m going to talk about a new indie game called Delta-Gal, a Mega Man Legends inspired indie game. Delta-Gal is a first person game which you play as a robot who explores a procedurally generated dungeon, discovering power-ups and defeating enemies. You can kill enemies, pick up their weapons, and use them to defeat other enemies. Delta-Gal is not your typical indie game: it features retro pixel art, a score system, and a procedurally generated dungeon which will never be the same twice.
Imitation is said to be the purest form of flattery. However, as the trade progresses, imitation may also become the most genuine kind of learning, leading to inspiration. What began as a desire to recreate the aesthetic and graphic style of Capcom’s Mega Man Legends games for the original PlayStation has turned into the Delta-Gal game development project. Spiritual heirs of beloved but otherwise defunct shows seem to be a recent trend.
Twitter user @ArthurVyater is working on Delta-Gal, a third-person action RPG. The graphic design has a Mega Man Legends vibe to it, which will appeal to long-time Mega Man fans. The static cel-shading, the crisp and blocky character models, the vivid colors, and even the town and vehicle designs all contribute to the overall look of the game. Mega Man Legends is all over this game. Which, to be honest, is enough to pique most people’s interest enough to investigate further.
Delta-Gal is a massive, rebooted project I’ve been working on for the past year and a half. It’s inspired by both the Mega Man X and Mega Man Legends games. It’s taken a long time to get this far, but it’s finally coming to a close. I’ve spent a lot of time on this game, and I hope people will enjoy it..
