Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Review The latest DLC for Dynasty Warriors 8, Xtreme Legends, will be released on the 19th of March. The DLC will be available for all PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players to download, and will feature two new playable character characters, as well as the new stage of the game, to add to the already huge Dynasty Warriors 8 game.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is a tactical action game for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo exclusively in Japan on June 26, 2015.
Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends is the latest installment of the Dynasty Warriors series and it’s the fastest one yet. The game packs a huge amount of content with numerous characters, weapons, vehicles, and maps. With that said, can it live up to the hype?
“Show me what you’ve got!” says the narrator.
Dynasty Warriors 8 is a historical tactical action game that follows the tales of the kingdoms of Wei, Wu, Shu, and Jin as they battle for control of the Three Kingdoms of China via the acts of real military and political leaders of the period.

Koei’s tactical action game isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s also not a step backwards. There seems to be so much more the game could accomplish, but it appears to be happy to remain mostly same from past Dynasty Warrior games, with minor upgrades.
“Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is a standalone expansion for the immensely popular Dynasty Warriors 8. It will feature additional episodes that expand on the narrative of the game’s three kingdoms, concentrating on the adventures of Lu Bu, the most powerful of fighters. In addition, 5 new characters will be included in DW8XL, giving players a total of 82 warriors to select from.”
Campaign
The campaign begins with no explanation of what is going on or even a demonstration of the controls. This is almost to be expected from players, presuming they’ve seen the whole series, which I haven’t. The game doesn’t get much simpler from there, as characters are added at breakneck pace, leaving the player feeling hurried and confused.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends has five distinct narrative modes, an offline/online free mode, an Ambition mode where players may “look to welcome the Emperor to your side,” a challenge mode, a gallery, and an encyclopedia in the special edition. It has a lot to offer, but the material seems like it will only appeal to a select few players, as shooters, RPGs, action adventure, and even indie games appear to be taking the limelight from fighting games like Dynasty Warriors in this golden era of videogames.
How does it appear?
On the Playstation 3, the visuals and gameplay are a strange mix of spectacular and awful. Lu Bu, for example, looks badass and is meticulously sculpted to resemble a seasoned warlord, but slashing through your 2000th boring Chinese soldier quickly loses its appeal; fortunately, this is mitigated by the addition of battlefield chores and boss battles.
While some character models seem to be completely distinct, others appear to be repeated often, which may be owing to the games’ ‘how many opponents can I cram into one screen’ approach. Some characters also seem to be a bit out of character, particularly female characters that appear to be dressed improperly for battle. A short skirt and high heels, for example, may not be the greatest option for fighting on a cold battlefield, but who am I to say?
There are some of the greatest old songs, but there isn’t much new.
It’s no Metal Gear; the pleasure of the game comes from the fast-paced slash and run action, not from the reason you’re doing it. I haven’t played any of the games since Dynasty Warriors 3 on PlayStation 2, and I recall mainly enjoying it due of the mayhem you could wreak on the battlefield with another player.
The game is plagued by little annoyances that increase in intensity as you go. These minor irritations, such as the music score repeating itself (the same guitar riffs on a loop will eventually drive you insane), characters repeating themselves, and saying things like “My role is to see the hidden truth that lies beneath each battle,” all seem silly to me and detract from the overall experience of the game, unless you turn off the music and skip most of the dialogue.
Though Dynasty Warriors 8 maintains the franchise’s fundamental gameplay that has been there since the first few games in the series, it seems a little sloppy and not as creative as you would expect a new release to be. As a result, Koei may not place a high emphasis on innovation.
A huge number of playable ‘officers’ and tales, a new Ambition mode, a varied character move set, online play, and improved visuals, as well as a gallery and an encyclopedia, are among the noteworthy changes I can notice.

It’s a game that you either love or loathe, and I’m caught in the center. I like the sense of leading soldiers into combat, and this is something the game excels at, but I don’t agree with some of the game’s gameplay decisions.
I was most disappointed since I remember playing DW3 vs mode with my brother all those years ago, seeing who had the best army and battling it out. We spent hours doing it, and it’s a pity it’s no longer in the game; it’s the greatest disappointment for me.
Pros:
- Epic battles that aren’t realistic
- There’s always something to do amid total mayhem.
- Button-mashers will love it.
- Action between two players
- A plethora of weaponry (some of which look absurd – even for DW)
- It retains the old school Dynasty Warriors vibe, which will be extremely recognizable to anybody who has played prior games in the series.
- Lu is one of them. Bu was a great addition.
- It’s a blast to play!
Cons:
- Voice actions that are overused, especially after finishing move combinations and special moves.
- Music that has been overused
- We’ve all seen graphics before (better on PS4)
- The writing may need some improvement.
- Menus and gameplay may be perplexing at times.
- Cutscenes should be savored since there aren’t many of them.
- It’s difficult to keep track of all the campaign’s names!
If you’re a fan of the series, I’d recommend buying it up; if you’re not, you may want to pass on this one, at least until the price drops.
On the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, PC, and PS Vita, Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is available.
