The Terraria community is always full of new and exciting issues, so I thought it might be helpful to compile this information into one place.
Terraria is a unique game that has received numerous updates since its initial release in 2011. The 1.1 update has left many frustrated gamers, however, since the game often suffers from various issues, ranging from annoying graphical glitches to game bugs, crashes and even crashes during new features.
Here are some of the most common issues that players experience through the Terraria 1.1 update, which includes 1.1.2. (Many will be seen through the update process before they are actually fixed.)
There are a couple solutions you may attempt if you’re experiencing issues with Terraria and the new 1.1 version. Please leave a comment below and let us know if you have any more patches or if any of the solutions listed below do not work for you. Thank you for taking the time to contribute. 1. Lags and low FPS in Terraria: This seems to be an issue with the 1.1 upgrade. The first thing you should do is ensure that frame skipping is enabled. Terraria moves at a snail’s pace without frame skipping.
- Before you do anything else, press F9 to change the lighting settings. The game may run slowly depending on the lighting settings. Many people’s latency is typically fixed by doing this!
- Terraria will lag and get low FPS if you don’t have the latest version of the .Net Framework and XNA, so check that those things are updated. (Make sure you install the .Net framework first, and then the XNA framework.)
- If you’re experiencing latency when playing the game full screen, consider switching to windowed mode.
- While playing Terraria, be sure no other applications are running in the background. (On certain machines, even having a movie open in an internet browser may cause Terraria to slow.)
- Changing lighting to retro, quality to low, and frameskip to “on” on a 1.6GHz dual core, ATI Radeon X1300 PC returned to pre-1.1 framerate, according to a Terraria forum post.
- Framerate problems may be resolved by turning off frameskip and enabling V-sync via visual card tools, according to some users. It’s possible that the video card drivers are different.
- Increasing framerate by adjusting parallax is a possibility. Raising parallax to 100% has been observed to improve framerate by one user in particular.
- Changing the quality from High to Auto may also assist with the framerate.
- Another option that seems to work for me was to Alt+Tab out of the game and back to your desktop, then Alt+Tab back in, which seemed to solve the latency for me. (If you are unable to alt tab for any reason, use Ctrl + Alt + Delete to return to the desktop and open the task manager.) Then just shut the task manager and launch Terraria from the taskbar.)
2. Terraria Isn’t Working / This game isn’t working right now: The warning “This game is temporarily unavailable” may appear when you attempt to launch Terraria on Steam. Close Steam (right-click the icon on your taskbar and choose “Exit” or press ctrl + alt + delete and select “Exit” from the Task Manager) to solve this.
Once you restart Steam, Terraria should work! If Terraria is still unavailable, try exiting steam one more time, and then starting the game again. If it still doesn’t work after that, the Steam servers are probably extremely overloaded (because the $2.50 sale and the 1.1 patch hit today at the same time, a lot of people are probably buying / playing Terraria. Don’t worry, the game will work again soon. Just keep restarting steam and trying again. That is what worked for me. (Took me 2 times of exiting steam and starting Terraria again to get it working.) Verify Game Cache: There is another fix you can try if the game still won’t run for some reason: – Right click the game in Steam. – Click properties. – Local Files. – Choose Verify Integrity of game cache. 3. Terraria crashes randomly: If you are running an anti-virus program that has a “Game Mode”, make sure you turn it on. There is a problem with Terraria crashing because of some anti-virus programs. – Make sure Terraria is unblocked by your firewall. – Another fix that works is deleting your config.dat file which resets your video and game settings to default. (Which is probably a good idea anyway after such a huge patch.) To delete your Config.dat file, browse to My Documents / My Games / Terraria. (Deleting your config file also fixes a problem where Terraria won’t let you change the in-game settings.) – Try lowering the game resolution, sometimes Terraria will crash on certain PCs at high resolutions. 4. Terraria Full Screen Mode: If you can’t seem to run Terraria in full screen mode, try hitting ALT + Enter which will force the game to go into full screen. 5. Update your system: Make sure you have the following updated: .Net framework 4, your video card drivers, the latest version of XNA 4.0 which you should install after the .Net framework 4. Note that Terraria will not run or you will have problems if these things are not installed, or your video card drivers are not updated. nVidia Drivers / ATI Drivers Your video card also has to be XNA compatible for Terraria to work. 6. System.Invalid.OperationException: (thanks to dune for this fix.) If you are getting the following error: System.InvalidOperationException: This resource could not be created. at Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Audio.AudioEngine..ctor(String settingsFile, TimeSpan lookAheadTime, String rendererId) at Terraria.Main.LoadContent() at Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Game.Initialize() If you have an SRS-enabled USB sound device (like Z-Cinema speakers), do this: Control Panel -> Sound -> Manage Audio Devices -> Right-click your speakers and click on Properties -> Click on the SRS Audio Enhancement tab -> Disable this feature. 7. Terraria Black Screen Problem: When you load your world in the Terraria 1.1 update, you may see a black screen with just your inventory and health, to fix this press F9 to toggle your lighting method or pressing Alt+Enter to go full screen. (If you’re running in windowed mode) 8. System.OutOfMemoryException: If you are getting the System.OutOfMemoryException error, delete your config.dat file to fix it. To delete your Config.dat file, browse to My Documents / My Games / Terraria.
NPCs aren’t moving in: 9. Gameplay bug: NPCs aren’t moving in: You may have to wait a while if you built a home and are waiting for NPCs to move into the rooms; NPCs may not spawn immediately. The best thing to do is continue exploring, digging, or building for a bit, and you’ll eventually receive a notification saying “NPC has come!” If an NPC spawns but does not immediately go to the room you have prepared for them, walk away and return; the NPC should then proceed to their room / home. If the NPCs still aren’t functioning, the guide may be killed as a final option. Other NPCs should appear when he returns.
10. Faulty controls: Delete your config.dat file if your controls are broken. Navigate to My Documents / My Games / Terraria to remove your Config.dat file. Your controls should function after restarting Terraria, and you should be able to reconfigure the keys to your satisfaction.
11. There is no sound or music Maintains a 0% level: Try the solutions listed above (deleting your config.dat file.) If all else fails, reinstall the game. It’s just 16MB, so it won’t take long to download and install, and it may solve any issues you’re experiencing. Do you have any tricks under your sleeve? Do you think any of these fixes are incorrect? Please let us know in the comments section below.
