Witcher 2 is on the verge of release, and we are all excited and ready for the game to finally be released. But wait, what about the items? How do you get them? What do you need to do to get them? What are the best ways to obtain them? This guide will provide everything you need to know about the items in Witcher 2.
As a Witcher 2 player, there are some things you need to know. Finding all the items is part of it, but there are also other things you have to keep in mind. Sure, you can go the way of grinding each level until you have the gear for a quest. But why bother? If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you’ll never find it.
Welcome to the Witcher 2 Weapons, Armor and Items Guide! I’ve created this guide to help you find the best of the best gear for your character, or at least help you make a choice on how to spend your loot since the game is so rich with loot.

Help with quests and items
This section delves further into a number of difficult-to-get items, including a couple that require the fulfillment of missions or the collecting of things over several chapters. You’ll frequently receive a ‘Quest Complete’ notification in a chapter for sidequests that span several acts, even if the quest continues in the following chapter. This is very normal. It usually doesn’t matter as long as you get the correct thing (s).
** THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS SECTION **
Obtaining Caerm
Caerm is the game’s finest steel sword, and it can be found in Chapter 3. You’ll need to complete the Gargoyle Contract sidequest in Chapter 3 to acquire it, as described below. You’ll also need a few things that must be acquired in earlier Chapters and brought to Chapter 3 with Geralt.
Obtaining the Sword
- During the Gargoyle Contract sidequest, you must retrieve a mystical tome from a chest (see below). It is possible to get the tome before beginning the quest.
- The tome is kept in a chamber under a gargoyle-guarded courtyard. To get to the courtyard, start at the Order camp’s Loc Muine gate. There are three doors leading further into the city; choose the leftmost door and you’ll end up in the courtyard. If you’re following Iorveth’s route, you’ll travel through this region soon after Iorveth enters Loc Muine.
- In Loc Muine’s marketplace, take the tome to the mage merchant/craftsman.
- The wizard will inform you that he need Queen endrega’s Pheromones, Nekker Warrior’s Blood, Necrophage’s Skin, and either a Harpy’s Egg or a Rotfiend’s Tongue. Only one of each is required.
- During the endrega Contract sidequest in Chapter 1, the Queen endrega’s Pheromones MUST be obtained. Pheromones seem to be a quest item. BE Cautious: the pheromones are also an alchemy component (the red one), and if you aren’t careful, they may be used up in potion creation. To be safe, I suggest gathering a couple Essence of Death from the wraiths in Chapter 2; they seem to take precedence when crafting potions using this component by default.
- The Blood of the Nekker Warrior must be acquired in either Chapters 1 or 2. There are no Nekkers in Chapter 3 that I am aware of. Because the blood is marked as a quest item rather than an alchemy component, don’t sell it.
- Rotfiends and (I believe) Drowners lose the Necrophage’s skin. It’s possible to get one from Rotfiends in the Loc Muine Sewers in Chapter 3, but it’s better to have one on you just in case.
- Harpies seldom release eggs, although they may be farmed outside of the city or in a tiny higher region of Loc Muine where harpies spawn.
- Deliver the four things to the wizard in order to obtain the Caerm schematic.
- The materials you’ll need to make the Caerm aren’t difficult to get by. You’ll need four harpy feathers, which may be found in Chapter 3.
The Contract with the Gargoyle (Caerm, Addan Deith, and Elder Blood Set) This is a Chapter 3 sidequest. In Loc Muine, there are three courtyards guarded by gargoyles. Each courtyard contains steps that go down to an iron gate, which leads to a chamber with four huge glowing runes and a chest encircled by a crimson magic field beyond. Some of the finest goods in the game are found in or lead to these chests.
Each room contains four huge glowing runes that Geralt may interact with on the walls and floor. The field is deactivated by touching the four runes in the proper sequence, enabling Geralt to access the treasure. Geralt gets harmed if he touches them in the incorrect sequence (Quen can prevent this).
Use the Runes if you’re looking for a unique way to express yourself.
- The significance of these runes is revealed in four volumes sold in the Loc Muine market by a mage merchant/craftsman.
- Each chamber has the same four runes:
- The sky is shaped like a diamond with a line running across the middle (like a pair of lips)
- Animal: a snake-like sign in the form of a S
- Art/beauty: It resembles a harp and is approximately triangular in shape with a vertical line.
- Time: It seems to be an hourglass.
- A bookstand is in each room, and when you interact with it, three lines of poetry appear.
- Each stanza includes a reference to the sky (such as a comet or lightning), an animal, a work of art or beauty (such as a painting or the term beauty itself), and a reference to time.
- In the same sequence as they occur in the room’s poem, interact with the four runes.
River Mystic (Varn Armor)
This quest may be completed in any of the three Chapters. In Chapter 1, you must get a key, which you will need to unlock three chests, one in each of the game’s three chapters. The Varn Armor schematic may be found in the last box in the Loc Muine sewers.
(Chapter 1) Obtaining the Key:
- The key may be found in a shipwreck near the Kayran’s lair’s rear corner.
- Pick up the key from the ground and use it to unlock a chest aboard the ship, which is just a few feet away.
- When you pick up the key, you’ll be given the Mystic River sidequest. You discover a manuscript in the chest, which you are then instructed to return by Royal Mail. I’m not sure whether you need to return the manuscript to receive the armor (in principle, all you need is the key), but it’s simple enough to do just in case.
- The Royal Mail box is in the same building where you got your Nekker and endrega Contract prizes. Talk to the same NPC that gave you these gifts and persuade him to let you peek inside the chest (through Axii).
- Near the conclusion of the act, there is another Royal Mailbox on Roche’s route. It offers you a ‘Quest Complete’ notice when you search it, although it isn’t required to complete the quest in Chapter 2.
Chapter 2 (Finding the Second Chest):
- The second chest may also be found in a shipwreck near two trolls’ lair in the ravines on the Vergen side of the mist.
- On Iorveth’s route, you must locate the trolls early in the Chapter as part of the main narrative.
(Zerrikaterment, Operator’s Staff) From a Bygone Era
This quest leads to a gateway in the sewers of Loc Muine. The portal leads to a hidden region with an NPC named the Controller who, if desired, would reset Geralt’s powers. You may also battle the Controller, who drops a dragon scale (which you’ll need to make Zig…) and the Operator’s Staff. It’s worth noting that these choices are mutually exclusive: choosing to reset Geralt’s powers means foregoing the scale and staff.
Geralt must acquire a set of magical notes from the Hut on the Cliff in Chapter 2 and present them to the mage merchant/craftsman in Loc Muine market to complete this task. He must next derive a password from the notes in order to access the portal.
Chapter 2: Getting the Notes:
- These notes may be found in Chapter 2, Roche’s route, during the Little Sister sidequest. These may also be found on Iorveth’s route after crossing the mists to the Kaedwani side later in the chapter, but there is no quest going there in this instance.
- Start at the Kaedwani Army Camp exit and turn right to reach the Hut on the Cliff. Between the brothel tents and the Blue Stripes’ camp, run down the little stream. Continue straight until you reach the cliffs; a way through the cliff may be found a bit to your right. Follow this route until you reach a beach area with a cabin (surprise) perched on a cliff. Turn right at the fork.
- A collection of barrels may be seen on the far side of the cabin. When you approach these barrels, you’ll be prompted to cast the Aard sign. To cast the symbol, hit the button displayed onscreen (do not cast it as you would in battle). As a result, the barrels are scattered and a trap door is revealed.
- A chamber with three altars lies under the trap door. You must light the candle on top of each one in the correct sequence. I believe the proper sequence is center, right, left, facing the entryway you arrived through. If you make a mistake, a ghost will appear, but you may try again.
- A hidden door is unlocked by lighting the candles in the proper sequence. The notes are on a table in the room beyond.
- You may show Dethmold the notes for Roche’s journey. He’ll tell you some lies and then offer to purchase them from you. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE THEM.
Getting to the Portal and Getting in:
- Show the notes to the mage merchant craftsman when you arrive at the Loc Muine market. He’ll explain that they contain a password that unlocks a hidden gateway. From the notes, Geralt must determine the password.
- After passing through the entrance at the bottom of the stairs, a huge gateway opens the next time you visit the Loc Muine sewers. You must choose the right password from a list of gibberish words in the correct order to provide the portal guardian with the correct password.
- I’m going to save you some time. The password is as follows:
- ‘Zi Uddu-Ya Ia Ia Gat Exa Nibbit Kanpa Gat Uddu-Zi’
- The gateway leads to a chamber where you must ignite many braziers in order to unlock the door. I never tried to solve this problem; simply light the candles at random and the door will open in no time.
When dealing with the operator, keep the following in mind:
- The Operator is an NPC in the chamber behind the door. When Geralt enters the room, the conversation with him starts automatically.
- Geralt’s powers will be reset if you choose the second dialog option, something like ‘How does it work,’ and then ‘Lets get started.’ All of Geralt’s skill points are reimbursed, and you’re returned to the character screen. After that, the controller vanishes, and you must exit via a different portal.
- The Operator attacks if you choose the first dialog option, ‘I am no chosen one.’ It’s worth noting that this eliminates the possibility of resetting Geralt’s powers.
(OPTIONAL): Defeat the Operator
- This is, in my view, the game’s most difficult battle. He can summon Gargoyles two at a time, casts Igni 2 (the AE version), Quen, and teleports throughout the room. On Hard, the Operator’s Igni and the Gargoyles’ assaults kill Quen 2 in 1-2 shots, and Geralt in 2 more unless you’ve gone all-in on vitality and damage mitigation.
- You start the battle alone with the Operator, with Geralt’s blade sheathed, which is unpleasant. Move quickly to dodge his initial Igni, then draw your STEEL sword (presumably the Operator is human) and go to town on him.
- When he teleports, stay a short distance away and strike as soon as he starts Igni. If you have your steel sword drawn and approach him too closely, he will often teleport away (however this may be used if you’re between Gargoyle summons and need time to regenerate Vitality).
- When the Gargoyles are called, there is a sound effect. Switch to your silver sword if you haven’t already.
- This is when things start to get a little hairy. While the Gargoyles pound you up close, the Operator will burn you with Igni. You may either keep the Gargoyles between you and him to stop the Igni, utilize the room’s pillars to block the Igni (though be cautious, the AoE will still tag you), or roll very well.
- If you’re fortunate, the Operator will teleport to a corner of the room, blocking his Igni with a pillar.
- You may also try fighting the Gargoyles in a corner where Igni is protected by a pillar. Make sure you’re not surrounded by the two Gargoyles.
- Gargoyles seem to be susceptible to stun if you’ve improved Aard or have +crit boosts. In addition, during his immediate kill animations, Geralt is indestructible.
- Unfortunately, I lack a foolproof method for defeating him. Sorry.
- I’ll admit that the first time I defeated him (on Normal), I had no idea he was human and spent the whole battle with the silver sword. Between Quens, he appeared to teleport a lot less, and you can still hold him stunlocked. Anyway, best wishes!
Gwyhyr, Chapter 2, Iorveth’s Path Only) Baltimore’s Nightmare I’ve included a quick tutorial for this task since it irritated me. The majority of the mission is spent following a confusing set of instructions. I wasted nearly an hour going around in circles, so I’ll spare you some time if you wish (but you’re welcome to try it yourself!).
- This quest starts in the Harpy Lair, which you encounter throughout the main narrative. This quest begins when you look at one of the crystals (just get all five crystals and watch them all).
- Return to Vergen and look for the entrance to Baltimore’s store. It’s directly next door to the alderman’s home (I think). The door is shut and locked.
- Speak with Baltimore’s apprentice, who owns and operates a rune shop just up the hill from the business. He’ll give you a key so you may look around the old workshop.
- In the rear of the store, there is a breakable wall (use Aard). A mysterious set of instructions and a key are hidden behind the wall.
- I’m going to save you a lot of time here. Make your way to the Old Quarry. A trail going up a small hill can be found just to the right of the gate leading to the Harpies’ Lair. A chest is concealed in the grass at the top of the trail. Use the key you obtained in the workshop to open it.
- Take this key to the wreckage near the troll lair in the gullies (same one from Mystic River). A door concealed behind some shrubs at the front of the boat. At midday, the boat’s overhanging plank casts a direct shadow on the door (referred to in the poem).
- Retrieve Baltimore’s notes by opening the door. To acquire the notes, you may have to deal with several hostile NPCs, but make sure you get them.
- To get Gwyhyr, return the notes to the alderman in Vergen.

First and foremost, kudos to CD Projekt Red for a well executed title. This game has earned a place on my shelf among Baldur’s Gate 2, Morrowind, Fallout 3, VtM – Bloodlines, and Dragon Age: Origins, despite its flaws. CDPR has the potential to be a huge success in the future.
On the gamefaqs/gamespot forums, Crimson Phantom, Isaac Redfield, Zack 3000, and others contributed to discussions that formed the building pieces of this guide. Thanks to maurer for sharing DLC item statistics. I’m responsible for any lingering mistakes.
