There was a time when a giant casino jackpot needed giant casino scenery. Flashing machines, carpets nobody would willingly put in their living room, and rows of players staring at spinning reels. Progressive jackpots belonged to places like Las Vegas.

Then the smartphone arrived and, rather quietly, put the jackpot machine in our pockets.

From casino rows to connected networks

The basic progressive jackpot idea hasn’t changed much. Unlike a fixed prize, a progressive jackpot grows as eligible bets feed a prize pool. The clever part was always the network.

IGT’s Megabucks, launched in Nevada in 1986, pioneered the wide-area progressive model, linking machines across multiple casinos. It proved that a jackpot didn’t have to belong to one machine. Many machines could contribute to one enormous prize. The concept is still alive: in February 2025, a Megabucks player in Nevada won more than $12.3 million.

Online gaming simply removed the casino floor from the equation.

Instead of connecting physical machines across casinos, software providers could connect games and players digitally. Suddenly, someone playing at home could contribute to the same progressive pool as thousands of other players. Geography became much less important.

Mega Moolah showed what was possible

Microgaming’s Mega Moolah became one of the clearest examples of that transition. Released in 2006, the online slot built its reputation around four progressive jackpot levels and a networked prize pool.

The numbers eventually became difficult to ignore. Guinness World Records recognizes Jon Heywood’s €17,879,645 Mega Moolah win in 2015 as the largest nominal jackpot payout on an online slot machine game in its category.

But there is another interesting part of the Mega Moolah story: mobile.

A mobile-friendly version arrived in 2012. According to Mega Moolah’s own historical data, the first five years produced no mobile jackpot winners because there simply wasn’t a mobile version. By the late 2010s, smartphones and tablets had become a major way players were accessing the game.

That is a pretty dramatic change for an idea born around physical casino machines.

BetAmo and the mobile casino lobby

The transformation is easy to see on platforms such as BetAmo. Its Canadian-facing site currently promotes more than 2,400 casino games and specifically highlights mobile slots for Android and iOS. For players browsing jackpot games in Canada, this kind of casino lobby illustrates how far the format has travelled. The jackpot is no longer presented as a special machine sitting in the glamorous corner of a casino. It can sit beside regular slots, live games and new releases in the same mobile catalogue. The phone has effectively become the casino floor — only without the carpet.

Mobile changed more than the screen size

Moving jackpots onto smartphones required more than squeezing five reels onto a smaller display.

Casino games had to become touch-friendly, quicker to load and comfortable to use vertically or horizontally. Interfaces became cleaner. Jackpot counters could remain visible without swallowing the entire screen. Browser technology also improved enough that players increasingly didn’t need dedicated desktop casino software.

More importantly, networked jackpots became portable. The progressive pool exists on the provider’s infrastructure rather than inside the device. A smartphone is essentially another doorway into it.

The idea continues to evolve. In November 2025, IGT reported that an online player in Quebec won CA$1.38 million on Wheel of Fortune Ruby Riches, part of its Powerbucks network. The company reported another $11.1 million Megabucks jackpot that same month on a physical machine in Las Vegas.

That contrast is almost perfect.

One jackpot was hit online in Canada. Another came from a casino machine on the Las Vegas Strip. Different screens, different environments, but descendants of the same networked idea.

The jackpot didn’t disappear. It escaped.

Mobile gaming hasn’t killed the classic progressive jackpot. It has actually made the concept much more flexible.

The spectacle is different, of course. A smartphone won’t produce a crowd gathering behind your chair when the jackpot hits. Probably a good thing if you’re playing on the bus.

But the central attraction survived the technological jump remarkably well: a prize that grows because many players are connected to it.

Progressive jackpots once needed rows of machines and miles of casino wiring. Today, they need networks, software and a screen small enough to fit in your hand. That’s quite an upgrade for an idea born on the Vegas floor.
