The online casino market in Canada has grown significantly in recent years. More operators are opening shops in permitted provinces. They are falling in line with the regulated provincial model to reach the untapped market in these places.

Despite playing catch up to established markets like Europe, Canada's welcoming regulatory framework in Ontario, and now Alberta, posts a positive outlook on the future. Digital consumer behaviours are shifting too, as more Canadians opt for mobile play and live content at an online casino canada site. Here we’ll learn more about the current market projections of the online casino market.

What the global scene looks like

The global entertainment scene shows scaled growth in the online casino market. The growth boils down to technological advancements coupled with adoption of blockchain technology, AI, mobile, and VR/AR gaming.

The regulatory scope in most markets is tightening on loopholes while enforcing new regulations to dictate operators’ mandate. We are witnessing an increase in consumer protection legislation in the wake of gambling addiction becoming a global phenomenon. More emphasis is on responsible gambling tools to regulate players' activities, like self-exclusion and time limits.

The changing consumer preferences with online casinos are pushing for more tailored gaming experiences. Consumers are shifting from desktop gaming to mobile gaming. A responsive website doesn’t only make the cut. Operators need a fast-loading, low-data-consuming, and simple-navigation site.

Live dealer games need the real-world touch with human dealers and are shot in professional studios. There’s a need for social engagement through a live chat function during gameplay.

More opportunities with regulation opening up

For a long time, Canada, bundled with the American markets, was slow to capitalise on the growth of the online casino market. The tight regulations pushed most operators away to the more welcoming European and Latin American markets.

The gambling scene changed forever on April 4, 2022, when Ontario allowed operators to serve residents under provincial oversight. The change in the regulatory landscape saw a jump in market size and gaming revenue collected. Alberta has since followed with its own regulated private market, launched on July 13, 2026, and other provinces are watching closely to see if they'll do the same.

Outside of Ontario and Alberta, Canadian players have relied on platforms operating under other licensing frameworks. ToonieBet, for instance, serves players across the rest of Canada under a Tobique Gaming Commission licence, offering a broad casino and sportsbook selection that includes major leagues like the CFL and NHL.

The heightened acceptance of online casino services by the residents pushed for more stringent regulations for sites. This came through legislation setting provincial standards and operating agreements. The end result was clear guidelines on how complaints from players were handled.

Another sector that worked hand-in-hand with the rise of online casinos was banking. Financing options available were scrutinised to regulate acceptable payment methods, fees charged, and transaction times. Operators would openly publish this information for players to understand what they're signing up for.

The full disclosure to consumers made it a far more acceptable approach to online gambling. Previously, most of the Canadian gambling audience resorted to unregulated sites. After the enrollment on April 4, 2022, the usage of unregulated sites fell.

Responsible gambling remains part of that disclosure, regardless of province. Licensed platforms typically offer deposit limits and self-exclusion tools, and Canadian players can also reach the Responsible Gambling Council for free, confidential support.

What's life like for new operators

New operators enter a safe gaming environment regulated for a mature gambling audience. There’s stiff competition among operators, with innovative products taking a large share of the market’s attention.

At first, there were only 12 operators who kicked off the journey after the Ontario declaration. Currently, around 50 operators are active in Ontario alone, according to iGaming Ontario's own figures, with more choices again available to players elsewhere in the country.

The market is more responsive to cutting-edge products than before. We’re witnessing more gamblers take to live dealer games with fast loading times, HD quality, and a live chat function. The same appeal for traditional casino games like online slots, blackjack, roulette, and poker remains unchanged.

But there are new formats operators are introducing to the table, such as crash and instant-win games. These titles have simpler mechanics than traditional slots or table games, which has broadened who plays them.

The only bone of contention remains in certifying new games to ensure they meet the fair gaming standards. Operators are taking the proactive step by partnering with third-party testing companies like eCOGRA and iTech. These companies test the games’ RNG to ensure results are random and not predetermined.

What the future looks like

Canada still has steps to take to claim a share of the market currently dominated by markets like the UK. However, the fundamental steps, like opening markets in Ontario, are a step in the positive direction.

There’s a need to regulate the market to dictate how operators continue with their services. But the newness of the entire scene means there’s still research on the impact it has on the audience.

The Canadian audience has more to gain from playing at regulated sites without fear of losing their funds or facing an unfair gaming environment.
