The creation of the Quiet Man’s Kensei Fujinaga + Hideo Kojima’s SHODAN in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain stunned fans worldwide. In this blog, I’ll provide my thoughts on the two creations.
The Quiet Man’s Kensei Fujinaga is having what Hideo Kojima is having. … Look, in all honesty, I’m not even sure what I just wrote there. I think that’s why I’m doing this. You’ll have to forgive my lack of eloquence, though I’m not sure I could help it if Hideo Kojima pulled that same trick on me. I’m not always an eloquent fellow, but I’ll try my best to make sure each of my sentences are at least worth the effort of reading them.
After the highly anticipated release of Death Stranding, I thought it was time to finally get to know the mysterious Kensei Fujinaga. I went through all the trailers and even watched some of his most recent gameplay, but there was still so much I was curious about. After seeing his performance during The Quiet Man’s recent stream, I figured that would be a good place to start.
The Quiet Man was one of the titles Square Enix revealed as part of their E3 sizzle reel. The teaser didn’t reveal much, consisting mostly of video of a silent man knocking up two men in an alley.
Is he a superhero who is deaf? Is he really that quiet? Why does he go about with brown paper bags in his hands, as if he’s some sort of hyper-violent courier? It’s left most of us in the press scratching our brains as to what precisely this game will be about, who the target audience will be, and even when the game will be released.
Producer Kensei Fujinaga has spoken out on the game’s official Twitter account to clarify the idea that “lies at the heart of The Quiet Man.” And by explain, I actually mean “intentionally foster further confusion.” The first producer letter from Fujinaga reads:
“‘Words’ is really incredible. They have the ability to alter the world. This can’t be denied. Words are as important to me as they are useful to others. However, I think that we are capable of making connections that go beyond words—for example, a baby just has to look into his mother’s eyes to know he is secure and loved. And, in a world where cascades of words are taken for granted, I can’t help but believe it’s often difficult to see such linkages.
Words have the power to change one’s awareness; in fact, some people believe that “words are life.” But what if we choose to abandon such a way of life? What if we were able to comprehend one another via heart-to-heart, soul-to-soul connections, and could once again gaze into one other’s eyes and establish such a pure bond? The Quiet Man is built on this idea. Aren’t the emotions that remain after words have been abandoned, sensations that can be communicated even without words, the ones that matter most in this life?”
Fujinaga-san, thank you for your explanation. Square Enix will provide more information on The Quiet Man in August. In other reports, Fujinaga was spotted with Hideo Kojima ordering the same turkey sandwich.
